whale cottage, PEI

Today was the day. After nearly a year of negotiations, inspections, red tape and three closing dates, today was the day we finally took possession of our tiny little slice of cottage heaven on Prince Edward Island. Some people think we are crazy. "When will you go?" "That's so far away, why would you buy there?" Well, most of those people have never been to Prince Edward Island. If you've been here, you know why. We know why and we couldn't be happier. Here she is:

As I write this I am nestled in a makeshift bed - camp cots made up as if we are camping in an African safari - just under that upstairs window. It is dark and silent and divine. We are minutes from the ocean. You can feel it in the air. Tomorrow the fun begins. A holiday of decorating and mini renovating with many seafood feasts and beach adventures to celebrate each day's accomplishments. I will have much to tell you and show you about the progress here and over at the STYLE AT HOME blog. The full reveal is planned for the pages of STYLE AT HOME next summer. For now I can tell you the plan, in the words of the great Elsie de Wolfe: "plenty of optimism and white paint."

Congratulations! You only have to go once to PEI to understand the allure. There is something so completely relaxing and rejuvenating about being out East. It's a completely different lifestyle where things are much slower and more real. Can't wait to see the reveal!

Margot - I'm so excited for you! I wondered what had happened with the cottage since you initially announced it and am delighted it all worked out. I can't wait to see you make it a home. I don't think you're nuts at all - or, at least, I'm a similar kind of nutty!

How lucky are you - a city house, a country house, and now a seaside cottage to decorate! I'm envious of all the decorating adventures (and lobster suppers!) ahead but eagerly await the transformation. Having been to PEI once, I can appreciate its charm and dream of digging my toes in the red clay sand again too.

Jane, yes I very much like the thought that you and I could be a similar kind of nutty.

Jennifer, I do feel lucky - a bit overwhelmed, but definitely lucky.

Just came upon your blog and PEI caught my eye. I am a San Franciscan but my grandmother came from PEI and we spent many glorious summers there. You will love the food, beaches and the overall charm. End of July, (like now) is simply a magical time to be there. Jealous!

What a wonderful adventure you are about to embark on. White paint... woo hoo. Think Tricia Foley. I cannot wait to see the cottage evolve. Have fun.

By the way, I was in Toronto this weekend and stopped by your hubby's shop on Younge. It was closed by the time I hoofed there. Oh well, next time.

Margot! I'm so happy for you. I just interviewed Nam Dang-Mitchell and she just told me about your place. News travels. I remember years ago you told me you wanted a place on PEI. I'm so happy you made that dream come true. I love that place. Congrats!!!

Yay!!! So happy it all came together perfectly! Suggestion for the garden? Shasta Daisies, Stonecrop sedum, peonies, coneflower, sea thrift, mums for fall, and moonflower (I have some and will give you seeds, they are pale lemon, magical and only open at night!). Congratulations!!!
